The Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts is a full service arts conservatory that provides quality arts education in music, theatre, dance and visual art. Information about inspiring, nurturing and non-competitive programs specifically designed for children aged 6 and up are listed below.

NEW! 3-D Magic

Warm-up your hands, it’s time to sculpt, fold, and engineer art that pops off the page or stands on its own. MCA will provide materials
from clay to wires and colorful paper, all you have to bring is your imagination and be ready to learn new techniques.

NEW! Mixed Media Extravaganza

Get ready to expand your art technique tool box and flex your creative muscles while you learn to create unique mixed media artwork. New techniques such as texture, layering, stenciling, and composition will be introduced each week as you collage with new, recycled, and other found materials.

2019 PTA Reflections  

Since 1969, the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Reflections program has encouraged students across the nation to explore their artistic talents. The PTA Reflections program is designed to promote cultural arts in schools, encouraging students to create works of art in visual arts, photography, literature, music, dance, film and special artist categories. Every March since 2016 the walls of Galleria Valéncia have been adorned with all of the Minnesota state winners visual arts division of the 2018 Minnesota State PTA Reflections program. That will still be the case in 2019, but the newest development is that MCA is now a registered Northstar Minnesota PTA unit in good standing and any area youth in Preschool-Twelfth Grade is able to submit a work into the Reflections program now- Jan. 15, 2019. The program is open to any area youth that has been an MCA student within the past year, as long as the student’s school does not have a PTA unit regardless if they attend a public, private, charter school or are home educated.

Submission Deadline: Now through Jan. 15, 2019

“Frozen” Dance and Art Adventure Workshop

There will be miles of smiles as students dance and craft their way through  a magical journey unleashing their imaginations in this workshop centered around the movie “ Frozen” and perfectly timed to align with Winona’s Winter Carnival celebration and Frozen River Film Festival.  

Day/Time: Saturday, Feb. 9th, 12:15 pm- 2:15 pm

Ages: Preschool (3-5 years) & K-2nd grade

Price: $19 (snack included)

Location: TBA ( either at MCA or Winona State University to make it even easier for Parents who want their children to participate in a fun activity while they attend a film set from the Frozen River Film Festival.)

 

May the 4th be with you....Create a Comic Workshop

This workshop is in celebration of the holiday Free Comic Book Day (Always the first Saturday in May) and Star Wars Day (May the 4th). During the workshop young artists will celebrate the art of comic books and learn about how to create their very own comic. Drawing comics is a great way to promote literacy skills and for kids to flex their creative muscles.

Homeschool Visual Art Show

The 4th annual Winona Area Homeschool Art show will take place January 2019. It is free to participate in this show and it is open to homeschool students of all ages, announcements will be made through the Winona Area Homeschoolers, but others may contact Megan at: 507-453-5500 or mca@smumn.edu for details. Items for the show may be dropped off starting Dec. 1st. Students are encouraged to submit more than one piece of art (only 2-D pieces that are can be tapped or pinned on the wall, framed pieces with hanging hardware attached can also be submitted.) and as space permits extra pieces will be hung.  Beauty and the Beast

Prairie Fire Children's Theatre (PFCT) will be back in Winona to present their original version of the classic tale, "Beauty and the Beast". "Beauty and the Beast", with script and music by Daniel Nordquist and costume and set design by Deborah Nelson-Pick is a tale about an unjust prince, a gypsy curse, and a young girl who sees beyond appearances. Students aged 7-18 will be cast in the original musical production of “Aladdin”. Any student registered will be cast in this week-long production. All cast members are required to participate in the audition process on April 22nd to determine their role. Cast members MUST be available for rehearsals Monday- Friday, 4pm-8:15pm and performances on Friday, April 26th at 7pm and Saturday, April, 27th at 2pm. Performances are in MCA’s Academy Theatre at the Valencia Arts Center.

Adventures in Acting

Your imagination will run wild as you explore the magical world of theatre. Play acting games, learn how to conquer stage fright and
how to think quick on your feet. You will even prepare a short scene to present to your friends and family on the last day of class.

Kids Night Out

Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts is so pleased to partner with the Page Series to offer childcare on-site at MCA's home, the Valencia Arts Center while parents enjoy the KEIGWIN + COMPANY's "Places Please!" Kids will be engaged in a variety of activities that will tickle their creative muscles and be provided with a snack. Tickets for "Places Please!" can be purchased through Pagetheatre.org.

Day/Time: Saturday, Nov. 10, 6:15 p.m.- 8:30 p.m. ("Places Please!" begins at 7 p.m., so parents will have time to get kids settled, grab a drink and then enjoy the show)

Ballet I

Beginning classical ballet basics, including the introduction of barre work.

Boys in Motion Ages 5-6

Calling all super heroes, knights and future athletic stars, this dance class rocks!  Specifically designed for young boys ages 4-6 years, to enhance athletic skills, flexibility, coordination and strength while also being introduced to ballet and contemporary dance.

Introduction to Irish Dance technique. Students will learn basic jig and reel steps, along with ceili dances.

Dance Repertory Company

In addition to dance classes, an exciting part of learning experience for MCA students is performance opportunities. Students may audition for MCA's pre-professional performing ensemble, the Dance Repertory Company (DRC), or MCA's junior performing troupe, Dance Repertory Company II. DRC produces two production annually. Biannually DRC presents a full-length production of the traditional holiday classic The Nutcracker.

Private Lessons

MCA offers private lessons for all ages and abilities! Our experienced teaching artists prepare students for a lifetime enjoyment of music.

Private lessons are offered year-round. Instruction available in flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, violin, cello, guitar, bass. piano, percussion, and voice. Students will be expected to purchase method books the instructor feels best address the student’s needs. Students have the opportunity to perform during MCA’s Annual Fall and Winter Concerts and other performance opportunities based upon instructor recommendations. Some instruments such as the violin, guitar and piano are better suited for young students, if you have a young child who is interested in learning an instrument please contact us at 507-453-5500 for more information or by filling out a registration form indicating an instrument of interest.

NEW! Short & Sweet Choir Experience

Do you love to sing? Do you love to be part of a group? Choral music is the best of both worlds! Come join us for a one-week
choir experience where we will help you build your own vocal skills and work with others to create amazing vocal art. We will finish the week with a brief showcase performance during the MCA Music Division Concert. Learn more about this program and why singing in a choir is great for kids!

Date: Dec. 10-14 and April 29-May 3 (register for one or both, different music will be explored each week!)

Jazz Combos

Jazz combos help students learn the art of jazz in a small ensemble setting. The Jazz Combo session will provide basic instruction in jazz-related rhythm, tone, style, concept, listening skills, and improvisation. The ultimate goal of these ensembles is to give interested students the opportunity to study and perform jazz ensemble literature. The combos will pay at a variety community performances, TBA All musicians and instruments are welcome, but space is limited.

Homeschool Songwriting Workshop with Amanda Grace

Have you always wanted to try to write a song? Here is your chance to join kids your age in a group setting; working side by side with local singer/songwriter Amanda Grace on a song that YOU help write! Students will enjoy getting lost in the process and showcasing their song with a live performance on the last day of class.

Suzuki Guitar

Parents! Come learn how to teach your little one the guitar and have fun doing it. Geared for parents with children ages 4-6 years old, The Suzuki Guitar Method is based on the way a child acquires language. Besides instilling the gift of music, it is also an opportunity to bond with your child while teaching socialization skills, patience, persistence, community, respect, problem solving, and joyful participation. Our instructor, Kerry Klungtvedt, is a nationally registered Suzuki Teacher with many years of experience. This program is comprised of a mix of parent only, parent & child, group and private lessons. For this exciting pilot program participation is very limited but guitars will be issued to both parents and children to use throughout the program.

Winter: Saturdays, Jan. 28-March 25

Time: class 10:00am-10:30am, lesson scheduled directly prior or after

Age: 4-6 years old with a parent or guardian

Price: $189 (include guitar rental for both adult and child guitar)
