Adult Explore Doodling & Colored Pencil Techniques

Students explore using shapes, lines and patterns to create artwork and even relax the mind with doodling. And did you know that there are a multitude of special techniques that can be applied using colored pencils? Creating highlights, shading, blending, shapes, and more. All supplies will be provided.

Doodle Club

Each week students will have a chance to unwind from their day as they explore using shapes, lines and patterns to create new doodle designs. Come create and even relax the mind with us.

Students will just need a device enabled with Wi-Fi, white 8 1/2 x 11 typing paper, pencil, eraser and fine line felt tip black pen. Additionally, colored pencils or markers can be used to enhance creations, but are not required.

Teens Tappin'

Calling all teens, this is your chance to give tap dancing a try. You will love this friendly, non-competitive, invigorating way to get moving. So lace up those tap shoes and get ready to make some noise.

Students joining in-person will need to familiarize themselves with MCA's COVID Code of Conduct.

Day/Dates: Mondays, May 17- June 21 (no class 5/31 or 6/14)

Time: 4:30-5:30 p.m.

Age: 12-18

*Please don't let the lack of tap shoes be a barrier, we have a tap shoes that can be borrowed in most sizes, just contact our office at mca@smumn.edu.

Contemporary I - A beginning level of contemporary dance for ages 7 and up. Contemporary is an expressive dance genre that combines elements of classical ballet, modern, and jazz. Classes will focus on body and spatial awareness, intentional movement and self-expression.

Day/Dates: Wednesdays, May 10-June 14

Time: 5:00-5:45 pm

Age: 7 and up

Tap Camp

Join us for an exciting week of rhythm!  TAP CAMP will include classes in tap technique, repertory, improvisation, body percussion, music theory, and concepts for the tap dancer, tap history, and tap in films. TAP CAMP will hold new challenges for beginning, intermediate, and advanced tappers. An informal demonstration for family and friends will be held on Sunday, along with a potluck. Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, come on dancers, it's TAP CAMP time!

Tap for Kids and Tap I:  (ages 6+, no experience- two years experience)

Tap II-V:  (Intermediate & advanced Tap Dancers ages 11+ or MCA Tap levels II-V. Tappers will participate in a placement class on day one.)

Dancers should bring water bottle. Snack will be provided.

Progressing Ballet Technique 

This class utilizes exercise balls and bands to develop muscle memory for increasing strength, stability, flexibility and range of motion for all dance genres, but is specifically designed for the demands of ballet technique.  A small class size ensures that each dancer has the benefit of personal corrections from the instructor.

Students joining in-person will need to familiarize themselves with MCA's COVID Code of Conduct.

Day/Dates: Mondays, Aug. 30-Nov. 1 (no class Sept. 6)

Time: 4:15-5:00 p.m.

Age: 12 years+

Junior Training Program for Dancers

Are you an intermediate dancer that is ready to take your dance technique to the next level? MCA’s Junior Training Program offers participants a daily ballet technique class, pre-pointe and beginning pointe technique and a variety of theory classes such as choreography, costume design and injury prevention. Additionally, dancers have the opportunity to experience a “genre of the day” class, including jazz, modern, musical theatre and hip hop. Each day will end with a rehearsal for a public final showcase. Registration due by May 1, 2023

No auditions are necessary for participation, but a minimum of 3 years of ballet technique is highly encouraged.

Ages: 9 years - high school
Location: In-person at Valencia Arts Center (MN Conservatory for the Arts)
Fee: $760 Tuition fee which includes over 60 hours of instruction
Room & Board: $1060 which includes meals, lodging, transportation and chaperones.

Jazz Combos

Jazz combos help students learn the art of jazz in a small ensemble setting. The Jazz Combo session will provide basic instruction in jazz-related rhythm, tone, style, concept, listening skills, and improvisation. The ultimate goal of these ensembles is to give interested students the opportunity to study and perform jazz ensemble literature. The combos will pay at a variety community performances, TBA All musicians and instruments are welcome, but space is limited.

Day/Time: Tues. 6:30-7:30pm, Wed. 6:15-7:15pm, Wed. 7:15-8:15pm

Age: Grades 6-12

Combo practice times are flexible and dependent on the needs of the members. Contact director with questions.

This program is currently on-hold due to COVID-19, but we hope to offer it in the future once again.

Private Lessons

MCA offers private lessons for all ages and abilities! Our experienced teaching artists prepare students for a lifetime enjoyment of music.

Private lessons are offered year-round. Instruction available in flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, violin, cello, guitar, bass. piano, percussion, and voice. Students will be expected to purchase method books the instructor feels best address the student’s needs. Students have the opportunity to perform during MCA’s annual fall, winter and summer concerts and other performance opportunities based upon instructor recommendations. Some instruments such as the violin, guitar and piano are better suited for young students, if you have a young child who is interested in learning an instrument please contact us at 507-453-5500 for more information or by filling out a registration form indicating an instrument of interest. Virtual and in-person lessons are available.

  • 4, 30 minute lessons- $80
  • 8, 30 minute lessons- $160
  • 12, 30 minute lessons- $240

45 minute and 1 hour lessons may be arranged for more advanced students.

The Thirty-Three Little Pigs

Ham it up in this fantastic new twist on an old tale! Squeal with delight as the 33 pigs in the meadow continuously outsmart the hungry wolf, much in the style of Roadrunner and Coyote or Tom and Jerry. From Straw, Stick, and Brick pigs to Pirate, Chef, and Ninja pigs (plus 27 endearing others!), they each have their chance to misdirect, heckle, and hound the bumbling Big Bad Wolf, who only finds himself further and further from getting his fill of little piggies! Full of classic, pop-culture, and world-inspired piggie characters and references, actors and audiences alike will go hog-wild for this show! MCA COVID Code of Conduct must be followed by all cast, faculty, and audience members.
