Summer Dance Intensive Auditions

My daughter had a great time at SDI. She enjoyed the teachers, learning new styles of dance, as well as being challenged in styles of dance that she was already familiar with. The teachers were encouraging and supportive. I would highly recommend this SDI.

What can I expect at MCA's Summer Dance Auditions?

Please plan to arrive around 30 minutes prior to audition to get signed in, get your number, warmed up and focused. The audition will be lead by MCA’s Director of Dance, Tammy Schmidt and be run like a full ballet class. Students with pointe experience should bring pointe shoes to the audition class.

Following the ballet class, students have the option to show a prepared jazz, tap, modern, hip hop, contemporary, tap or character dance center combination of at least 64 counts or 16 bars.

Students who are considering attending Saint Mary’s University of MN in the fall and would like to be considered for a dance scholarship should also bring a dance resume and photo to be included with their audition form.

Is there a fee to audition?

No, it is free to attend the auditions or submit a video. New for 2020 we are asking dancers to register for auditions by filling out this form. Registration ensures that we are able to communicate any changes in auditions due to weather. For the Summer Dance Intensive participation fees please visit the SDI page.

Do returning students need to audition?

No, if you have been a participant in the MCA Summer Dance Intensive you do not need to audition to participate in the program unless you would like to be considered for a talent based scholarship. We also offer returning students a 25% savings off their tuition fee (unfortunately there is no discount on room & board fees)

We value returning students and the experience they bring to the program as well as we love to provide them with new challenges year after year. Please let us know that you will be returning by registering here and sending in your $50 deposit by May 1.

How do I know if my child has been awarded a talent-based scholarship?

Dancers selected for talent-based scholarships will be notified at the time of acceptance and will have a two-week time period to accept and register. If a student who received a scholarship does not choose to attend the MCA Summer Intensive, that scholarship will be passed on to another student. Your child will be contacted if additional scholarships become available.

Due special circumstances, video auditions will also be considered for scholarships for 2020.

How can I also audition for a scholarship for the Saint Mary's University Dance Program?

Students who will be entering University in Fall of 2019 will be able to simultaneously or solely audition for MCA's Summer Dance Intensive and the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota (SMUMN) Theatre and Dance Department, Dance Scholarship. The dance scholarships are renewable scholarships that range from $1,000 to $2,000 a year. Dancers wishing to apply for this scholarship should also provide a dance resume with their application. For more information about the SMUMN Theatre & Dance Department click here. There is no fee to be considered and video auditions are accepted.

When will I know if I have been accepted or not?

MCA will notify you by email within two weeks of your on-site audition and within three weeks of digital submissions. If you have auditioned for MCA’s Summer Dance Intensive and not heard from us within this time frame, please contact us at: mca@smumn.edu or 507-453-5500.
