The Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts (MCA) and the Saint Mary’s University Department of Theatre and Dance will present the Dance Repertory Company in “The Nutcracker” Wednesday through Sunday, Nov. 30- Dec. 4, 2016 at the Saint Mary’s Page Theatre.
Heralding the message of peace on earth, “The Nutcracker” is performed around the globe during the holiday season. Producing this delightful ballet every other holiday season, the Dance Repertory Company once again brings this magical experience to the Winona area community for it’s ninth biennial production.
The cast includes over 90 dancers including students from Saint Mary’s, Winona State University, and children and community members from the Winona and surrounding areas.
Through this ballet the beauty of the pure, young heart shines bright in a world of dancing dolls, angels, and of course, the wonderful magical Nutcracker Prince. In the dreams of a child named Clara, a battle wages between a band of mice and company of toy soldiers. With Clara’s assistance, the toy soldiers are victorious and grateful. A Nutcracker Prince welcomes her to the Land of Snow, where they dance with the angels, and to the Kingdom of the Sweets hosted by the Sugar Plum Fairy where she sees a beautiful array of ethnic dances such as Spanish Coffee, Chinese Tea, and Russian Baba.
“The Nutcracker” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, through Saturday, Dec. 3, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens.
A special abridged version, ideal for young audience members who may not be able to sit through the full-length ballet, will be presented at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30. The cost for this afternoon matinee is $5 for everyone. Also Families and teachers may enjoy preparing children with this Nutcracker Education Guide.

Tea Party attendees have the opportunity take photos with and interact with characters from The Nutcracker, shop for unique gifts in the Land of Sweets Boutique, enjoy a performance, eat scrumptious treats, and sip tea. Learn about the journey of Saint Mary’s University student Sam Wersch while he studies Musical Theatre Performance and Dance. Coming into his Junior year, Sam is preparing for multiple roles in MCA’s Dances from the Nutcracker that will be performed in December of 2021.
We are excited to announce that we will be holding auditions on Saturday, September 11, 2021 for Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts Dance Repertory Company Theatre’s Dances from the Nutcracker, this will be a more COVID friendly and flexible version of the Nutcracker featuring your favorite characters from the Nutcracker. Dancers aged 6 and up is invited to audition. There is no fee to audition, but dancers who are cast should be enrolled in one dance class this fall session, will be required to pay a cast fee that help cover choreography instruction and costume fees, additionally families will be asked to complete volunteer duties or pay an opt out fee.
We will be holding a Friends of MCA meeting (MCA’s volunteer advisory board) on August 17, 6:30pm at MCA, additionally, we will have an online option to join us through the Zoom link below if you are out of the area or not comfortable meeting in-person. We will follow MCA’s COVID protocol for the meeting, which currently requires everyone to be masked regardless of vaccination status.
