MCA is excited to extend an invitation to MCA students, parents, and community members who are interested in helping us make a difference through arts education. This spring we have three opportunities to get involved.
On Tuesday, April 13th 6-7pm we will hold a virtual Friends of MCA meeting via Zoom. Friends of MCA is the official volunteer committee/advisory board for the Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts. Through volunteerism, this board of parents, arts educators and students, and other citizens active in MCA, fosters MCA’s mission of promoting and encouraging artistic expression in children and adults. This community member and parent-led association offers areas of participation in fundraising, volunteering, and coordinating community outreach events and benefits. The Friends of MCA’s Board is also an invaluable sounding board providing feedback and direction to MCA as an organization. Anyone interested in helping shape MCA’s impact on the community is invited to Friends of MCA meetings and events.
Next on Wednesday, April 28th, 6:30-7:30pm MCA is holding a professional development opportunity for our faculty and staff, but have a few spots open for MCA Community members. The free training will be provided by Vanessa Southworth of Family & Children’s Center is titled QPR: Question, Persuade and Refer. QPR is an evidence-based model proven to reduce the likelihood of suicide when a Gatekeeper utilizes the methods of Question, Persuade and Refer. QPR Gatekeeper training is specifically designed and developed to raise public awareness about suicide and better identification and referral of people at risk for suicide. Gatekeepers are those citizens in every community who, because of their contact with those at risk of suicide, are often in the best position to identify and refer people thinking about suicide. QPR is designed and developed to: raise awareness and dispel myths and misconceptions about suicide; and teach 3 skills (Question, Persuade and Refer) that can help save a life. QPR is free due to a grant from Minnesota Department of Health.
Finally, MCA is thrilled to be partnering with local dance artist Sharon Mansur on 1001 Arab Futures June 3-5. 1001 Arab Futures will be an outdoor dance and visual art experience outside MCA and we are looking for three ushers (ages 13+) per night who can help guide attendees during this COVID friendly performance.
