This December is looking different for most of us due to COVID-19, so we wanted to find a way to inspire you and your family to have a Cre-active December (yes we made up a word that combines Creative & Active). We have chosen four weekly themes: Explore, Create, Move, & Connect. Each week we will challenge you to interact with the arts in a new way, we will provide ideas, and anyone who submits a photo either themselves participating in the challenge or a sample artwork by the deadline will be entered into the weekly prize drawing.

This week we challenge you to get your body moving in a new way. Due to the current pandemic situation and safer at home orders  it can be easy to feel stuck, however that does not mean that it has to be that way. Did you know that if make a commitment to trying new things you can reinvigorate this life with energy and excitement?

According to Harvard Health Publishing challenging your brain with new things, staying physically active, and being socially engaged may help keep our thinking skills sharp.  Cognitive and social engagement have been shown to protect against cognitive decline.

The best news is that you don’t even have to leave your home for this challenge. Thanks to on-demand TV & websites such as Youtube there are many new ways to explore movement in your living room. Try checking out our YouTube channel, our Dancers Stay Strong During COVID-19 playlist has everything from early childhood move games, tap routines, quick conditioning exercises, and Irish dance instruction to try out. If you have an exercise ball and drum sticks search for a cardio drumming workout to switch things up a bit or if you  have a young kiddo at home try out a Cosmic Kids Yoga adventure

If you want to check all of the boxes register yourself or your child for one of MCA’s Stay Strong Session Dance Classes or the Holiday Tap Jam. Though all of these programs are currently virtual, they have in-person components and participants will feel part of a community as they are challenged to learn new skills.

If you are up for the challenge and you are ready to experience the positive mental and physical health benefits of trying out new moves, just send a photo of yourself or a family member on your exploring movement in a new way, your name & any thing you would like to share about your experience to mca@smumn.edu by 11:59 PM on Sunday, December 13. You will then be entered into a drawing to win a dance/fitness basket designed just for the winner. This challenge is open to any US resident. Please note that by sharing a photo you are granting MCA permission to share it on our social media channels and website.
