According to The Chorus Impact Study choral singers not only learn music skills, but participation in choral singing programs also correlates with better social and emotional skills. Choir participation can help make students better participants in groups, lead to better emotional expression and management, improve overall academic performance, help instill self-discipline and more. Yet, despite the researched backed benefits of choir and music programs are disappearing from schools quickly. MCA knows that arts exploration in a community setting is critical and would like to meet demand and fill the void in the Winona community by increasing vocal opportunities for youth in a non-denominational setting. Thanks to support from the Slaggie Family Foundation MCA will be offering two opportunities this year for youth in grades 3rd-8th to participate in a week long Short & Sweet Choir experience, once in December 2018 and once in May 2019.
The choir experience is designed to peak interest and participation and build the foundation for longer choral experiences in the future. Past one-week theatre experiences and summer camps have been very successful at MCA, through feedback we have learned that families are interested and able to commit for an intense week to help expose their child to something new and peak their children’s interest into further exposure.
The first Short & Sweet Choir Experience will be directed by the talented Lindsy O’Shea and will meet daily Dec. 10-14, 4:45-6:15pm. The music explored will range from musical theatre to traditional tunes and students will learn how to work with others to create beautiful vocal art. The week is sure to excite and challenge students who are new to signing and those that have a a bit of experience. The week will end with a culminating performance during the MCA Music Division Concert on Dec.14th at 7pm. All choir members will be provided a t-shirt that will be worn during the performance. The fee to participate is only $35, however thanks to Slaggie Family Foundation support, full and partial scholarships are available. Those interested in being considered for a scholarship should fill out the Scholarship Application or contact the MCA office at 507-453-5500 for more information. Registration is open now online and in person for the December Short & Sweet Choir Experience and the Spring experience enrollment will open on Nov. 1, 2018.
