Galleria Valéncia at Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts is filled unique pieces of artwork created by art students of Jeff Morgan. Jefferson Elementary STEM and Goodview Elementary worked with local artist Andrew Foss to create work as part of an Artist-In-Education grant, sponsored by Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council, with supplies furnished by a grant from the Foundation for Winona Area Public Schools January 4-8, 2016. The students at Jefferson did small paintings from observation which addressed “what we use to learn”, using mirrors to focus on eyes, ears, mouths and noses or looking at their hands. Students at Goodview Elementary painted still-life paintings featuring observations of goldfish in small bowls, provided for the experience. Andrew Foss shared his work in a slide presentation and demonstrated a brief painting while outlining the goals of the experience for the more-than 500 students Morgan serves weekly. Students had to attempt to finish their painting within the 50 minute class period which elementary art students of WAPS have scheduled per week.
Select work from that experience and other K-4 art work from Mr. Morgan’s classroom is on display in the art exhibition space, Galleria Valencia at the Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts, April 2 – 29. There will be a small reception for the artists and their families April 13 from 4:30 – 5:30. The public is invited to attend. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund. Visitors are encouraged to sign the guestbook, so that the young artists know who attended the show.
MCA is in the process of setting up art shows for the upcoming school year.
